• Durga Pujas peaceful, Abhishek visits pandals

  • Durga Puja festivities passed off peacefully with lakhs of people coming out on the streets to witness the biggest spectacle in the world.

    Both CM Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee greeted all the party leaders who visited her Kalighat home today.

    Thousands of people visited the city from the districts to see important pandals. Sribhumi in Lake Town, Chaltabagan Sarojonin, Tallah Pratay, Hatibagan Sarbojanin, Kashi Bose Lane and Bagbazar Sarbojanin in north Kolkata were the crowd pullers.

    In south Kolkata, Chetla Argrani, Suruchi Sangha, Ekdalia, Samajsebi, Ballygunge Cultural, Mudiali, Bakulbagan, Tridhara attracted people. The Durga Puja at Santosh Mitra Square, organised by the BJP leader and councillor Sajal Ghosh, attracted lakhs of people. The theme of the Puja was Operation Sindoor.

    Chaltabagan sarbojanin’s theme was the evolution and development of Bengali language.

    Chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the Kalighat temple and offered puja on Navami night. She has been following the ritual for the past many years.

    Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamul Congress MP and party’s national general secretary visited several pandals in north and south Kolkata. He was accompanied by his daughter.

    Mr Banerjee went to Tallah Prataya, Chaltabagan Sarbojanin, Suruchi Sangha, Chetla Agrani and Tridhara. He talked to some of the migrant workers, who have come back to Bengal. He gave them Puja gifts and treated them over pani puri.

    Mayor Firhad Hakim today visited the ghats and oversaw the immersion arrangements. Most of the Durga idols which were worshipped in houses and housing complexes were immersed on Friday.

    The Kolkata police had managed the traffic efficiently with no jams taking place during the Durga Puja. The police did not allow the cars to be parked near important pandals and the visitors had to park their vehicles in the earmarked areas. Senior officers of Bidhannagar police commissionerate were posted to oversee the traffic management on VIP Road near Lake Town, the venue of Sribhumi Club’s Puja.

    Special police arrangements have been organised to ensure a peaceful carnival on 5 October.
