Carnival at West Burdwan gets bigger with addition of Pujas

A joint team of Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the West Burdwan district civil administration visited the venue for the final inspection ahead of the Durga Puja Carnival in Asansol, today.
S Ponnambalam, district magistrate of West Burdwan, along with senior officials of the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC), took part in the inspection.
Mr Ponnambalam said that this year’s Durga Puja Carnival will be held simultaneously in Asansol and Durgapur on Saturday.
“We have prepared the road map for the event in both cities, and all necessary arrangements have been made by various departments and stakeholders, including the civic body, police, fire brigade, pollution control department and civil defence,” he said.
According to the district magistrate, 15 Durga Puja pandals will participate in this year’s carnival across Asansol and Durgapur. Ambulances, bio-toilets and fire tenders will be stationed near the main carnival venues in both cities.
Gurudas Chatterjee, MMiC of Asansol Municipal Corporation, announced that this year’s seating capacity for the carnival in Asansol will be around 20,000. “Last year, 12 Durga Puja pandals took part in the carnival show in Asansol. This year, the number has increased to 15. Dona Ganguly will perform with her dance troupe, and eminent singer Sriradha Bandopadhyay will also take part in Asansol,” he said.
In Durgapur, panchayat minister Pradip Majumdar, ADDA chairman Kavi Dutta and MP Kirti Azad will be present.
Meanwhile, in a major development, IndiGo Airlines announced the launch of direct flight services between Durgapur and Varanasi from 28 October.
