The festive month proved to be a boon for the Kolkata Metro Railway that emerged as one of the choicest modes of transport for the Puja revellers. Registering a record footfall, the public carrier transported more than 2.25 crore passengers last month, which was the highest ever monthly passenger count in the history of Kolkata Metro Railway.
According to the data received from the city Metro office, last year 1.98 crore passengers were carried in the month of September. The crowd had started swelling in the Kolkata Metro Railway even before the onset of the peak Puja days. As per the data received, till 21 September, the city Metro had carried 1.5 crore passengers. Also, on 22 September, which was early Puja days, the carrier recorded an increase in passenger count than last year registering a passenger count of more than 8.69 lakhs. As many of the revellers started pandal hopping early and the schools, colleges and offices were still functional, with a brief cut down on 23 September when the city witnessed a record rainfall, the passenger count remained high even on the day of ‘Dwitiya,’ observed on 24 September.
On 25 September, the passenger count shot up to 9.33 lakh. According to the city Metro office, the figure of 9.33 lakh was higher than last year’s passenger count of 5.40 lakh on Tritiya. However, from Panchami, the footfall started to increase further and the city Metro registered yet another record passenger count of 9.82 lakh. A closer look at the data reveals over 35.5 lakh commuters availing the city Metro between Panchami and Ashtami. Interestingly, the city Metro carried more than 75 lakh passengers only from 22 September to 30 September. The addition of three new stretches and specifically the Green Line, took the passenger count to a new record of more than 2.25 crore last month.
