  • An incident of alleged brutal murder took place in an ornament shop at Baranagar this afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Sankar Jana, a gold merchant, who was allegedly found dead in his own shop on Sambhu Das Lane, Baranagar, today.

Police sources said the victim’s hands and legs were tied when the body was recovered. Preliminary investigation revealed that the alleged murder took place inside the shop between 3 and 3.30 p.m, according to an officer.

The incident came to light after the deceased’s son, who was in Delhi, alerted Baranagar police station when he noticed that the CCTV cameras in the shop were not functioning and failed to get any response from his father.

Prima facie, an officer from Baranagar police station, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the body bore wounds on the head, suggesting a deliberate killing. It is suspected that the entire incident was executed after switching off the CCTV cameras.

Initial investigation revealed that the CCTV system had been active before the crime, but the assailants allegedly switched it off during the execution of the murder to hinder the investigation.

Sources claimed that around five miscreants had entered the shop disguised as customers. Two of them reportedly waited outside to keep watch, while the rest are believed to have committed the crime.

The incident, which occurred barely 100 metres from Baranagar police station, triggered tension in the area. Gold traders in the locality expressed fear and a growing sense of insecurity following the murder.

Police have launched an investigation but are yet to find any leads regarding the identity of the assailants or the motive behind the crime. The extent of loss is also yet to be ascertained, and investigators are probing whether it was a murder for gain or the result of personal rivalry.
