Ghatal: Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has released 55,000 cusecs of water from its Maithon and Panchet reservoirs, triggering fresh flood concerns in the southern districts of Bengal.
Parts of the Ghatal subdivision, including Chandrakona and 12 wards of the municipality are under water.
State irrigation minister Manas Bhunia held a meeting with administrative officials on Sunday night.
Bhunia accused the DVC of releasing water daily without coordinating with the state govt. "Years of neglect in dredging and desiltation at DVC's Maithon and Panchet dams have drastically reduced their water-holding capacity," he said.
"While the main Damodar stations are not yet in the danger zone, the rising tendency at Jamalpur and Rondia is being watched with extreme caution," an official said, adding, "Any further increase in water flow from the upper basin could worsen the situation." Though the Shilabati river's level has dipped slightly below the danger mark, the Rupnarayan continues to rise. Ghatal police have opened a community kitchen, while 20 boats have been deployed in the Ghatal block and municipality and 12 in Chandrakona.
Five medical camps are operating, with 58 medical teams visiting affected villages.
