  • The Supreme Court today cleared the appointments of vice-chancellors (VCs) of eight universities in West Bengal, following a hearing today by a Division Bench of the apex court.

Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked the state to start the process of appointing the VCs to the universities, which include Calcutta University, where there were no nominations either from the state or the Governor, in his capacity as Chancellor, for the post of VCs after vetting the recommendations made by the Supreme Court-appointed committee led by former Justice UU Lalit. The committee was entrusted with the job of assessing the list of names as suggested by both the state and the Governor.

As things stood, the Division Bench gave the nod in clearing the appointments of names on which both the Governor and the state had reached unanimity.

Following the ruling of the top court today, universities like Jadavpur, Calcutta, Gourbanga, Sadhu Ramchand University, Kazi Nazrul University, Raigunj, Biswa Bangla University and Uttarbanga University would get new VCs. These appointments were pending for a long time due to friction between the state and the Governor over the nominations.

Calcutta University is now going to have a change in guard in place of Shanta Dutta De, who is officiating as VC and courted controversy recently when she turned down a request from the education department and the TMCP leadership for postponement of exams scheduled on 28 August in view of the TMCP’s annual day programmes.
