  • In a major boost to connectivity, the Ranaghat – Bangaon section of Sealdah Division under the Eastern Railway is headed to a mega expansion of railway network. Getting impetus, the stretch yesterday received a sanction of Rs 396.04 crore from the Railway Board for doubling work in Ranaghat – Bongaon section. With the doubling work of the Ranaghat – Bangaon section spanning over a stretch of 32.93 km the railways is aiming to decongest the route which has a capacity utilisation of 114 at present.

The Ranaghat – Bangaon section is a key section of Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division connecting Bangaon station near the international border to the Sealdah – Krishnanagar main line at a shorter distance. It enables quicker movement of freight as well as of local passengers between adjacent districts Nadia and North 24-Parganas. While Ranaghat Junction is a station situated on Sealdah – Krishnanagar – Lalgola Main Line section, Bangaon is a junction station situated at Sealdah/Kolkata- Dum Dum Bangaon – Petrapole near Bangladesh border. The two stations situated at the remote ends of the two districts of Nadia and North 24-Parganas connect the stretch with a single line railway network at present. To cater to the increasing demand, the divisional railway authorities introduced AC EMU local trains service between Ranaghat and Sealdah via Bangaon passing through Ranaghat-Bangaon route.

However, the growing population has created a need for faster logistics as well as passenger movement which has further brought out the requirements of faster connectivity in the region.

According to the divisional railway officials, the doubling of the railway line in the Ranaghat – Bangaon section is anticipated to enable seamless movement of freight and passengers from erstwhile remote areas of different stations in the section including Cooper’s Halt, Naba Raynagar Halt, Gangnapur, Majhergram, Akaipur Halt, Gopalnagar and Satberia to other parts of West Bengal as well as to the other states in the country. It will also help in decongestion of the section keeping in view the present capacity utilisation of 114 per cent of the section thereby mobilising both passenger and freight traffic. After the completion of the doubling work project, the need for detention for crossing of trains like in the single line section would be eliminated and speedy movement would be established between Ranaghat and Bangaon.

According to the divisional railway sources, the doubling of this section will also create avenues for additional freight traffic of 0.88 MTPA and services of additional 10 passenger trains per day in each direction over this stretch resulting in additional earning of Rs 8.66 crore.
