• After 5-month delay, 4k to take CU law entrance test

  • Kolkata: Around 5,000 applications were submitted for 2,000-odd undergraduate law seats at Calcutta University-affiliated colleges.

The university for the first time revamped the LLB entrance test format but given the delay in the admission process, fewer applications were received than that previous years.

The entrance test will be held on Oct 14 from 2 pm to 4 pm.

The university has uploaded a list of 4,103 applicants, who have been found eligible for the test.

"The process has never started this late. The reason behind the delay is the late approval from the Bar Council of India as law department officials had not paid the renewal amount on time. The university deposited the money immediately after it was alerted, said a university official.

"The delay has resulted in fewer applications by undergraduate candidates than last year but the overall number is quite satisfactory.

    "

Students, who aspired to study law in Kolkata, had to wait for over five months for the entrance test. Such a candidate, Soumita Mitra, said, "I always wanted to pursue law at a CU college. It felt strange that all my other friends had already got their undergraduate admission and I kept preparing for the entrance test.

I am anxious as it will be my final chance to get UG admission. The chance for pursuing any other course is now shut.

    "

The university overhauled the format of the law entrance test by involving a third party to conduct a computer-based test (CBT) for the first time. Till last year, the CU law department conducted the entrance test. The rape on a law college campus revealed several admission anomalies, prompting the university to overhaul the entire entrance process.

This time, candidates have to take a computer-based test for 100 marks of multiple-choice questions, but there will be no negative marking.
