• Two postal employees die in road mishap

  • Two employees of the postal department died at Galsi — about 25 km west of Burdwan town — this morning, after a speeding mail-loaded container van rammed into a gas carrier vehicle on NH-19.

    The van was carrying postal mail from the General Post Office (GPO) in Kolkata to Asansol. The mishap occurred at Galigram crossing on NH-19 in Galsi, when the van collide heavily with the gas vehicle in front of a refuelling station.

    The deceased postal staff was identified as Sanjoy Biswas, the driver of the vehicle, and Gautam Pal, the mail guard. Gautam was a resident of Rishra in Hooghly, while Sanjoy hailed from Tehatta in Nadia.

    Sukanya Banerjee, inspector, Railway Mail Service (RMS), Kolkata, said that the container had been loaded with mail from Salt Lake and RMS Kolkata, and had exchanged mailbags at Burdwan railway station late last night. The mishap occurred while the vehicle was on its way to Asansol and Durgapur.
