  • A Trinamul Congress delegation met the director general of police in Tripura and urged him to arrest BJP leaders, who instigated party workers to ransack the party office off Agartala in Tripura.

A party delegation comprising Kunal Ghosh, party’s state general secretary, Pratima Mondol, Sayoni Ghosh, Sushmita Deb all MPs, Birbaha Hansda, state tribal welfare minister and youth leader Sudip Raha met the DG and urged him to arrest the culprits immediately. They submitted a letter to the DG.

Video recording of the incident shows that the attack was engineered by the local BJP MLA, district president and the youth leaders. The delegation also urged the DG to give protection to the party workers after the delegation had left for Kolkata.

The leaders also submitted the complaints that had been lodged after party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s car was attacked in 2024 and no one was arrested in this connection. The leaders said the DG had assured them that prompt action would be taken.

Reacting to the attack on Khagen Murmu by some people in Alipurduar on Monday, Pratima Mondol said the party did not endorse the attack on Mr Murmu. Party chief Mamata Banerjee had condemned the attack and met Mr Murmu in hospital on Tuesday. “The BJP leaders had gone to the flood-hit areas in a convoy of 10 cars and did not carry any relief material. The affected people did not like this and attacked Mr Murmu.

The Trinamul delegation was kept waiting at the airport for two hours. The party leaders alleged that the drivers of their convoy were asked to leave the airport. The leaders were asked to travel in one car to the spot. The leaders sat outside the airport and protested. Later, they were allowed to visit the spot. Trinamul Congress leaders put up the party flags that had been uprooted and thrown on the ground. The chairs had been damaged and the rooms ransacked.

Meanwhile in Kolkata, state minister for women and child development and social welfare Dr Shashi Panja and party spokesperson Arup Chakraborty, while addressing a press conference, condemned the incident in Tripura. They called the incident “state-sponsored terrorism.” Dr Panja said, “When the Prime Minister blamed Trinamul workers and held them responsible for the attack on Mr Murmu, why did he not say a single word to condemn the attack on the party office in Tripura. This is BJP’s attitude. They talk a lot about peace but support goonda culture.”

Mr Chakraborty said no action had been taken against those who had attacked Abhishek Banerjee’s car in 2024. “The attack on Trinamul Congress office shows that the BJP in Tripura is scared of Trinamul.” He said the party is keeping a tab on the situation and would act accordingly.
