  • A shocking incident rocked Andiron Halderpara under Begunbari gram panchayat in Murshidabad’s Beldanga early on Wednesday, when a 40-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and nine-year-old son before ending his own life.

Police said the accused, identified as Sanjib Halder (40), reportedly slit the throats of his wife Mousumi Halder (28) and son Raihan Halder (9) with a saw inside their room and later hanged himself from the ceiling. Preliminary investigation suggests that domestic discord led to the gruesome crime. According to local sources, the horrific discovery was made around dawn when Sanjib’s mother, while going to the bathroom, peeped through the window and saw her son hanging. Raising an alarm, she called in neighbours, who broke open the door only to find the bodies of Mousumi and Raihan lying in a pool of blood. “The entire room was soaked in blood. It was a horrifying sight,” said a neighbour, still in shock.

Police from Beldanga police station reached the spot soon after being informed and sent all three bodies to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. A police officer said: “It appears that the man first killed his wife and son and then took his own life. We are investigating whether there was any other reason behind the incident apart from marital dispute.” Meanwhile, Sanjib’s mother told police that her son had frequent quarrels with his wife, and she blamed her daughter-in-law for the tragedy.

A police source said forensic experts were collecting samples from the spot to reconstruct the sequence of events. The investigation is continuing.
