Kolkata: Amity University officials have submitted the internal investigation report on five first-year law students' complaint of assault and caste slurs against second-year BBA students.
Police, too, visited the New Town campus and launched a parallel investigation.
Bidhannagar Police started collecting CCTV footage, recording witnesses' statements and questioning the complainants and the accused.
According to the complaint, on Sept 16, the five first-years, all belonging to Scheduled Tribe communities in Sikkim, went to play football on the university ground, when the group of seniors allegedly blocked their entry, hurled caste insults, called them "tribals" and told them to "go play in the jungle".
When the first-years protested, the seniors allegedly assaulted them, with around 25 more senior students joining in before university staff could intervene.
Police said the second-year students lodged a complaint, accusing the first-years of initiating the altercation.
"We visited the campus. We are collecting evidence and recording witness' statements," a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
No one was arrested till Thursday evening.
Amity University VC Ashok K Srivastava said they had submitted the internal investigation report to the inquiry committee and formed a disciplinary committee. "Police inquiry is going on. Officers visited the campus and carried out verifications. We are extending full support and cooperation to the authorities."
A university official claimed the altercation started outside the campus and spilled inside. On the fateful day, a security staff member of the university stopped the altercation between the two sides. "One student got injured and was handed over to his parents after being administered first aid. After this issue, the parents and students lodged police complaints. Both parties have their views, so all these things will be examined by the committee members, who will submit a detailed report," an official said.
