Police seize illegal firearm, crackers in pre-Diwali raid

The district rural police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at Malpara in Haripal on Wednesday evening and seized 515 kg of prohibited illegal firecrackers. Four persons were arrested in connection with the seizure.
The circle inspector of Tarakeswar police station, Prasanta Chatterjee, said that more such raids will be carried out before Kali Puja and Diwali to prevent the entry of banned firecrackers into the market, seize them, and arrest those involved.
Those arrested from Malpara, Haripal have been identified as Arup Das, Bablu Bauri, Moti Bauri and Dipankar Basudeb. They were produced before the Chandannagar court and subsequently remanded to police custody for further investigation and interrogation.
In another incident, the Chanditala police, acting on information about a planned burglary by a group of miscreants, who had gathered in the Khanpur area of Chanditala, rushed to the spot and managed to apprehend one of the group members while the others fled.
The officer-in-charge of Chanditala police station, Anil Raj, said that the arrested person, identified as Santosh Gupta, a resident of Jagdishpur in Howrah district, was found in possession of a pistol and one live bullet. He was produced before the Serampore court and then remanded to police custody for further investigation and interrogation. The police have launched a search operation to trace others who managed to escape during the raid.
