  • Jalpaiguri: The forest department, on Friday, rescued a stranded rhino from Pundibari in Cooch Behar.

On Oct 5, during the Torsa flooding, it was swept away and carried nearly 25 km inside Cooch Behar — a video of which went viral on social media.

Multiple teams from Cooch Behar and Jaldapara divisions were deployed to guide it back to Jaldapara.

As the rhino moved far from the forest and appeared tired and disoriented, seven kunki elephants were mobilised to assist in guiding the animal northwards and prevent human-wildlife conflict."Given the long distance from the forest and its weakened state, we decided to tranquillise it. On Friday morning, at Pundibari, the animal was tranquillised, secured, and lifted under expert supervision," said Praveen Kaswan, DFO, Jaldapara. It was released in Chilapata.
