The New Township Police Station (NTPS), under the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate (ADPC), launched an investigation following a complaint of alleged rape of a second-year MBBS student of a private medical college in Durgapur lodged last night.
The victim’s family arrived from Jaleswar in Odisha in the early hours today.
Sources said that the victim had gone outside the hostel campus around 9 p.m. on Friday with one of her classmates. Outside the gate, they were stopped by five unidentified men who demanded money from them.
The male classmate reportedly fled the scene, while the five men allegedly abducted the girl and raped her near a wooded area. When the classmate returned a short while later, he paid the men Rs 300 and took the girl, who was bleeding profusely, to the hospital. He also informed the victim’s family over the phone about the incident.
Officers from the New Township Police Station questioned the classmate last night. Although the student’s condition is currently stable, she remains in severe trauma, hospital sources said.
The victim’s father has urged police to arrest the culprits immediately, alleging that the classmate might also be involved in the incident. He further criticised the hostel authorities for failing to maintain adequate security and held both the college and hostel management responsible for the tragedy.
Although the private medical college has lodged a police complaint, it has not yet issued any public statement regarding the case.
A National Women’s Commission team led by Archana Majumdar rushed to Durgapur to take stock of the situation. State’s health headquarters already has sought for a detailed report on the victim girl’s health condition this afternoon. The girl, according to her father: “Was admitted in a critical condition and the attending doctors told me that her condition was serious and she’s kept under medical supervision in the intensive care unit.”
The medical college authorities have claimed that the girl was found walking towards her hostel at around 9.31 p.m. The director, IQ City Medical College, Sudarshana Gangulee, in her statement mentioned: “At 7.58 p.m, both the students left the campus for dinner. One of them returned at 8.42 p.m, but after loitering around the main exit area for around 5-6 minutes, she stepped out again at 8.48 p.m.” Gangulee’s report added: “The two then returned together at 9.29 p.m.”
Then, Gangulee stated: “It came to light that the female student, while she was outside campus, had endured an assault – an occurrence she herself had claimed and reported.”
The CPI-M supporters entered the campus of the medical college and hospital this afternoon and staged a protest demanding justice for the victim and punishment for the offenders.
DCP (East) Abhisekh Gupta of the ADPC said that NTPS has begun investigations, scanned CCTV footage from the area, and questioned several individuals. “The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and a special team has been formed to probe the case involving the MBBS student,” he added.
