  • NEW DELHI: The West Bengal Police on Monday made another arrest in connection with the alleged gangrape of a second-year medical student in Durgapur, officials said.

The fresh arrest brings the total number of arrests in the case to five.

Earlier in the day, police had arrested the fourth accused.

Police had initially arrested three individuals, who were remanded to 10 days’ police custody by a local court on Sunday.

The alleged assault took place on Friday night. The survivor, a student at a private medical college in Durgapur, is originally from Odisha.

Meanwhile, a three-member delegation from the Odisha State Commission for Women, led by chairperson Sovana Mohanty, will visit Durgapur to meet the survivor’s family and review the medical care and police investigation.

“We will check on her health and meet her parents. We will submit our recommendations to the State government after inquiring about West Bengal’s medical treatment, her mental health, and whether a proper investigation is being conducted,” Mohanty told news agency ANI.

She added that the team would also look into fast-tracking the case and the status of the remaining accused. “Odisha CM talked to the girl’s father and the administration,” she said.

Bijiyani Singh, Senior Field Officer and Consultant for the Odisha State Commission for Women, added that the team may also meet with investigating officers. “We will ensure that she gets proper medical treatment and justice. No one is above the law,” Singh said.
