JU students agree to more security, refuse extra CCTV

Kolkata: Ahead of the Nabanna meet between the state and JU regarding security issues on Wednesday, students, teachers, officials, and non-teaching staff agreed on enhancing vigilance on campus.
This would involve deploying more security personnel, including female guards, installing more street lights, putting up proper fencing around water bodies, and forming a team of teachers, students, and guards to patrol the campus after sunset until late evening.
However, students unanimously spoke against the installation of more CCTV cameras at the stakeholders' meeting on Monday. They felt CCTV cameras alone cannot make a campus safe, nor stop criminal activities.
While most teachers, stud-ents, and staff rejected the proposal of a cop outpost on campus, they were in favour of implementing punishment by JU for breaking rules and engaging in nuisance or unlawful activities on campus.
JU authorities wrote to the higher education department urging them to provide an estimated Rs 7,51,488 per month for 32 trained security personnel and an estimated Rs 68,62,663 for 70 CCTVs.
A source said, "Amidst pressure to allow students' representation at the Nabanna meet, the pro-VC spoke to the principal secretary, who reportedly told the pro-VC to bring with him the students' demands and issues for a discussion. Further, they could also call for a tripartite meet."
A student said, "When the university is reeling under a funds crunch, spending a hefty sum on CCTV is irrational."
