KP to step up pre-Diwali drink-drive checks
Times of India | 15 October 2025, saw around 40 cases of drink -driving, a trend witnessed since Durga Puja this year. Kolkata Police expect the figures to remain high as winter, along with festivities, is about to set in.
Senior officers indicated that additional nakas will be part of night policing in the lead-up to
. The maximum violations were recorded at the 7-point crossing, followed closely by the CR Avenue-Sovabazar Crossing and JL Nehru-Park Street Crossing. The Chingrighata Crossing and Behala also witnessed major violations. The raids will be conducted simultaneously at 50 points across the city, with officers of police stations and traffic guards, led by ACPs, prosecuting law-and-order offenders.
An officer said that besides all police stations and traffic guards which pitched in, the detective department helped carry out special raids and seize ammunition and liquor from the arrested.
Police said they are also mapping the trouble spots, with the south, south suburban, and southeast divisions leading the list, where bike accidents have been reported. Several spots in the north, along with EM Bypass, will see extra deployment a couple of days prior to Diwali, said Lalbazar.
