  • Mirik/Kolkata: CM

visited multiple flood-hit villages in Mirik and Sukhia Pokhri on Tuesday, personally oversaw relief work and requested the victims to enlist their names if any important official document like Aadhaar card, EPIC or passport had been lost so that these could be reissued at the earliest.

"Special outreach camps for lost documents are taking place. Get enlisted if you lost any important document," Banerjee advised displaced villagers at a relief camp in Mirik.

Damaged or lost identity documents have led to growing unease among north Bengal flood victims, now that relief has reached everyone and people are slowly returning from camps.

With the special intensive revision of poll rolls in neighbouring Bihar, and with Bengal going to the polls in mid-2026, the anxiety was not without reason, felt govt officials.

Later, at the Sukhia Pokhri BDO office, Banerjee held a flood review meeting. "We have set up camps where you can get duplicates of lost documents. A health camp is functioning nearby. Community kitchens and relief centres are also there. Relief work is happening daily because it is our duty to stand by people.

The CM yet again identified Bhutan waters as the primary reason behind the floods. "We are sorry for this calamity but nature is not in our hands.

Moreover, Bhutan released waters from as many as 56 rivers. Entire bridges have been washed away, even a school has been lost forever," she said. Banerjee attacked the BJP-led Centre for indulging in "photo politics" without releasing any funds for the flood-hit. "You run businesses, but remember that you also have social responsibilities.

Don't just sit idle and give long speeches funded by BJP. You came once, took photos and disappeared.

We are rebuilding houses and bridges, clearing landslides and running relief camps and community kitchens. The Centre has no role here. A few people in north Bengal are spreading false news to demoralise others. Even now they are saying that I'm not visiting Mirik," she said. Reacting to allegations that she was not visiting flood-affected Dhupguri and Maynaguri, Banerjee said: "Some people are doing politics, let me clarify.

On the day I visited Mirik bridge, I, along with Arup Biswas, Gautam Deb and Nirmal Ray (local MLA) visited all three relief camps in Dhupguri. Relief materials were distributed door to door."

Banerjee also spoke at length on the relief work done so far. "Those who were affected have been given both compensation and jobs within seven days. PWD quickly cleared Mirik's roads. Every stretch affected by landslides has been cleared.

I would like to give credit to the civil administration, police and all departments involved," she added.

The CM said she had asked for the reconstruction of a school in Mirik and to develop at least two more tourist spots in the area like in Lamahatta. "We want to develop tourism spots at Pashupati Mandir and Sukhia. They would be eco-tourism destinations," she said.

Banerjee will conduct a meeting in Darjeeling on Wednesday. "I will review what we did, where we went and what actions were taken," she said.
