  • Kolkata: A total of nine rhinos from Jaldapara National Park have been rescued since the Oct 4 deluge in north Bengal. The operation to rescue the ninth was completed on Tuesday evening.

Jaldapara DFO Parveen Kaswan said the latest rescue was made in Putimari area near Patlakhawa forest in Cooch Behar.

Of the nine, five were driven back to Jaldapara by Oct 5. On Oct 10, another was tranquillised and brought back. Kaswan added that two rhinos were rescued on Monday, too, from Patlakhawa forest and brought back to Jaldapara after they were tranquillised. "These rhinos were swept away by Torsa floods and stranded since Oct 5," he added.

While bringing back the rhinos in tractor-like vehicles through green corridor, officers are hydrating them regularly. "We have special vehicles, but we are preferring the tractors since these are open-air vehicles," said an officer.
