Kolkata: Newly elected president of the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Priti A Sureka, aims to make the chamber more inclusive by bringing together large and small businesses and serving as a bridge between them.
Sureka, executive director of Emami Limited and the first woman president in MCCI's 125-year history, said on Tuesday, "I also want the chamber to become an effective bridge, catering to the requirements and needs of the business community. Because I do believe businesses build society, build the state and also build the family. So I want to make the chamber more inclusive and want to bring more diversity."
Highlighting that larger companies enjoy infrastructure and accessibility that smaller firms often lack, she said the chamber should be a platform where members can seek support, resolve issues and meet compliance needs.
"It is not that women businesses or women entrepreneurs are absent. Maybe they are small percentages. But we should have better representation of them," she added.
She also emphasised the importance of supporting Bengal's start-up ecosystem, assuring that MCCI would act as a facilitator to connect entrepreneurs with seed funds. Improved international connectivity, she noted, would further enhance the state's attractiveness as an investment destination.
