A mob assaulted a policeman and tore his uniform in protest against the alleged negligence death of a two-month-old in the state-run Egra Sub-Divisional Hospital in East Midnapore on Tuesday.
Incident rocked the hospital complex and with the intervention of a huge police force the situation was brought under control later this afternoon.
Locals said that Tapan Pradhan, a resident of Alanggiri in the Egra area, had brought his baby to the hospital about seven days ago.
Today, the baby was declared dead by doctors, who had been attending to the infant for the past one week.
The deceased’s parents and their relatives alleged that negligence in treatment caused the infant’s death.
“The doctors didn’t give proper medical attention to our baby and they ill-behaved with us. Our baby had been suffering from fever for the past few days and we took him to the hospital hoping for proper treatment. The doctors refused to discharge him after we decided to shift him to another hospital,” they said.
One security guard at the hospital also behaved inhumanly, the parents alleged.
“He said one more baby will come (born) and so why are you crying for him who is dead?” they alleged.
The aggrieved parents along with their relatives became angry and they attacked doctors, nurses and the security personnel at the hospital.
Policemen from Egra rushed to the spot and intervened to bring the situation under control. The mob slapped one policeman and tore his uniform when he tried to disperse the former.
Dr Samir Acahrya, superintendent of the hospital, said the baby was brought to hospital in a critical condition. “We will inquire into the allegations of negligence brought by the parents against some doctors and send a report in detail to the health department.”
Local residents alleged that a section of medical staff and security guards at the hospital never behave decently to patients and their relatives. The hospital authorities should take up the issue seriously to prevent such incidents in the coming days, they added.
