  • Kolkata: A 28-year-old biker, Md Sonu —a resident of Jorasanko in central Kolkata—died in a freak accident in the early hours of Wednesday. According to police, the cutting shaft of a heavy trailer truck—travelling from the Port area towards Vidyasagar Setu—malfunctioned, leading to the fatal incident.

"The incident took place on Karl Marx Sarani at Watgunge near Kidderpore Crossing around 12.50am, just when the truck was ascending the Kidderpore Iron Bridge. The truck, once it malfunctioned, began to roll back. The biker, who was riding right behind it, barely got a chance to escape to safety. He got sandwiched between the auto and the truck and lost consciousness. He was immediately rushed to the SSKM Hospital where he was declared dead," said an officer from Vidyasagar Traffic Guard.

The fatal squad of Kolkata Police, which is investigating the accident, said the accused driver fled towards the port but was later arrested.

"We are checking CCTV footage minutely. We will also carry out a technical analysis and find out if the truck was worthy to be on the road," said an investigating officer. The locals, though, claimed that the accident could have been averted.

"In Aug, the authorities set up a height barrier to stop trucks from taking the bridge. The very next day, a bus hit the height barrier and it was damaged. No effort was made to rebuild it," said Md Sarwar, a local resident. The cops stated that they were writing to civic bodies to reinstall the height barrier.
