Metro services hit again, commuters face hardship on busy weekday

Kolkata Metro services were partially disrupted yet again on Wednesday afternoon, causing immense hardship to office-goers and daily commuters on the city’s busy Blue Line.
The snag occurred after a crack was detected on the tracks near MG Road Metro station, officials said. According to sources, the problem was first noticed around 12.45 p.m. when a train heading north remained stationary at Maidan station for an unusually long time. The motorman reportedly did not receive the green signal to proceed, triggering anxiety among passengers. As minutes passed, some passengers disembarked from the train and began looking for alternative transport.
A few minutes later, an announcement informed passengers that services had been suspended due to “technical reasons.” The message led to chaos at Maidan and nearby stations, as many commuters hurried to exit while others chose to remain inside the stalled train hoping for restoration of services. Around 12.50 p.m, the stranded train was finally allowed to move up to Chandni Chowk station, where passengers were asked to alight. Soon after, the Metro authorities declared a complete suspension of services between Maidan and Dum Dum in both directions. As a result, the entire north-south corridor came to a halt, stranding hundreds of passengers on platforms and inside trains. Many office-goers and students were seen rushing out to find taxis, buses, or app-based cabs amid the afternoon heat, while others expressed anger and frustration over the repeated disruptions on weekdays.
The Kolkata Metro authorities later issued a notification through their official mobile app ‘Amar Metro Kolkata’, stating, “Due to unavoidable reasons, partial services are now available on the Blue Line—between Maidan and Shahid Khudiram, and Dum Dum and Dakshineswar. Inconvenience is sincerely regretted.” By late afternoon, engineers were still examining the damaged section of the track near MG Road to assess the extent of the crack and initiate repairs. Normal services were expected to resume only after thorough safety inspections were completed.
