  • The Asansol Durgapur Police have sought the assistance of a cyber law expert to appear as the Special Public Prosecutor in the alleged gang-rape case of a medical student in Durgapur.

The Commissioner of Police, Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate, had appealed to the state law department for the appointment of Bibhas Chatterjee — an expert in cyber law and electronic evidence — to handle the case. The law department accepted the request, and Mr Chatterjee arrived at the New Township police station today.

A police team, headed by deputy commissioner of police (Durgapur) Abhishek Gupta, along with OC Nasreen Sultana and investigating officer Gautam Biswas, provided him with the necessary documents and held a marathon five-hour discussion.

The six accused, including the victim’s boyfriend, Wasif Ali, are currently in custody at the same police station. They were remanded for a week by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court yesterday and will be produced again on 22 October.

Wasif, a second-year student of IQ City Medical College from Kaliachak in Malda, had accompanied his girlfriend — a student from Odisha to the forest patch about a kilometre from the college campus last Friday at around 9 p.m., where the crime took place.

The police have also sought assistance from cyber crime experts to determine whether any videos, photographs, or chat messages were deleted from the accused persons’ mobile phones. The victim’s phone has already been sent to the forensic laboratory for examination.
