A day after the chief minister and Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee held meeting a marathon meeting for more than two hours with Sovan Chatterjee in Darjeeling on Thursday, the former Kolkata mayor was appointed chairman of the Newtown Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) replacing Alapan Bandyopadhyay, on Friday.
With the appointment of Mr Chatterjee, a former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, the speculation flying around his ‘ghar waapsi’ to ruling Trinamul Congress became brighter ahead of the Assembly polls, likely scheduled in April-May next year.
“Didi has given me a massive responsibility today for the development of Newtown. I have no words to express my thanks to her. I will try my best on how to develop Newtown Rajarhat more scientifically in terms of drainage, environment, road connectivity etc,” an elated Mr Chatterjee told the media this evening.
He resigned from the state cabinet and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in 2018 and joined BJP 2021. But he was not happy with the BJP and left the saffron camp within months after joining.
The former Kolkata mayor had been distancing himself from active politics for the past four years though he had regular contacts with Trinamul Congress chief.
Sovan Chatterjee also met Abhishek later at Camac Street and held a meeting hardly a couple of days after the city recorded around 12 deaths allegedly caused by electrocutions in different parts of the KMC area in the last week of September.
