Kolkata: The Durgapur medical college rape survivor will take her first MBBS professional exams in Jan 2026. The exams had commenced on Oct 9, a day before the incident on Oct 10. The college administration said the survivor was unable to appear for the exams due to trauma and will be given an opportunity to clear the exam.
"The supplementary exams will be held in Jan-end. Usually, students who are detained in one or more subjects get to appear in these exams. But for her, there will be a spiritual provision to allow her to appear in all the exams," an official said.
The exams started at the medical college on Oct 9 and were scheduled to continue till Oct 17, with practical exams in the first week of Nov. But several exams were postponed due to unrest following the gang rape incident outside campus.
Sources said the survivor, during the recording of her statement before the magistrate, had indicated that she would prefer to appear for the papers during supplementary exams rather than sitting for them now.
While the survivor's father has expressed a desire to move his daughter to their home state Odisha, college authorities are hopeful she will convince her parents to continue studying at the institute and the administration will provide all necessary support.
"She is a bright student and is keen to become a doctor. We want her to pass out from here," said the director of the medical college. An official said, "We want to request the parents to not take her away. What happened is extremely unfortunate, but it should not scar her and destroy her dreams."
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has recommended academic relief for the 23-year-old to prevent disruption in her studies and ensure her well-being. "As the girl may miss her upcoming exam due to trauma, the National Medical Commission and college authorities should arrange a special exam to prevent academic loss," NCW said.
