Tension gripped Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia after a junior woman doctor was allegedly assaulted and threatened with rape by a traffic home guard and his neighbour inside the hospital premises on Monday evening.
Police arrested the duo late at night and produced them before the Uluberia court on Tuesday, which remanded them in three days’ police custody. According to police, the incident occurred when a pregnant woman from Kharia Maynapur was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon. During a routine check-up later in the evening, the attending junior doctor was reportedly unable to conduct a full physical examination due to the patient’s medical complications. This led to an argument with the patient’s relative, a traffic home guard, and his associate. “An altercation broke out, and during the confrontation, the accused allegedly slapped the doctor, twisted her arm, and hurled verbal abuses. They also threatened her with rape and warned her of dire consequences if she left the hospital premises,” said a senior police officer.
The ward master immediately alerted the police outpost within the hospital. Officers rushed to the spot and took the victim to the Uluberia police station, where she lodged a written complaint. Acting promptly, the police detained the home guard and another man from the locality. Both were arrested and charged with assault, criminal intimidation, and outraging the modesty of a woman. On Tuesday, the investigating officer produced the two accused in Uluberia court, which granted police three days’ custody for further interrogation. Meanwhile, the statement of the victim doctor was recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.
Reacting sharply, Union minister and former BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said: “After the horrific R G Kar case, the Chief Minister’s loud claims about women’s safety stand exposed. A woman doctor was harassed and threatened with rape inside a government hospital by a home guard. This shows the utter collapse of law and order under Mamata Banerjee’s rule. Women in Bengal are terrifyingly unsafe.”
Hospital authorities have also initiated an internal inquiry into the matter. Dr Subir, vice-principal and medical superintendent of the Uluberia Medical College, said, “We have formed a committee to investigate the incident. The report will be submitted to higher authorities within a few days.” Admitting that the medical college faces an acute shortage of security personnel, Dr Subir added that 28 additional guards were being recruited but more were still required to ensure safety on the campus. Meanwhile, police said security around the hospital has been intensified and surveillance enhanced to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
