  • The police on Tuesday night arrested another accused, identified as Sheikh Samrat, in connection with the alleged assault and rape threat on a junior woman doctor at Uluberia Hospital in Howrah district.

With this, the number of arrests in the case has risen to three. The accused will be produced before the Uluberia court on Wednesday, police said. The incident, which took place on Monday evening, has triggered widespread outrage among the medical fraternity and political circles alike. According to the complaint, the junior doctor was allegedly assaulted and threatened with rape by relatives of a patient while she was on duty at the hospital’s maternity ward. Police sources said the trouble began when the doctor was examining a woman admitted for delivery. As the patient’s condition was complicated, the doctor could not conduct a thorough physical examination at that moment and informed the patient’s relatives accordingly.

The relatives, including a traffic home guard and two others, allegedly became violent, accusing her of negligence. They reportedly slapped and manhandled the doctor, twisted her arm, hurled abuses, and threatened her with dire consequences, including rape. Following the incident, the traumatised doctor filed a written complaint at Uluberia police station. Police swiftly arrested the home guard and another accused on Monday night. The third accused, Sheikh Samrat, was nabbed later on Tuesday during a follow-up operation.

“All three accused are in custody and will be produced before the court. Investigation is in progress,” a senior officer said. The shocking assault has drawn strong condemnation from various quarters, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staging a protest on Wednesday in front of the SP (Rural) office at Panchla, demanding strict action against all those involved.

The protest, however, led to a tense face-off between BJP workers and police personnel. Eyewitnesses said BJP supporters broke through the first barricade set up near the SP’s office, leading to a scuffle with police. Officers tried to disperse the agitators using loudspeakers, repeatedly warning them against breaching security arrangements. As tension escalated, a large contingent of police, including senior district officers, was deployed to prevent further chaos. BJP leaders alleged that the police were trying to shield several others involved in the attack. “Only three have been arrested so far, but there are more who participated in the assault. The administration is trying to protect them,” a BJP functionary claimed.

Meanwhile, medical associations have demanded stronger security measures at government hospitals and exemplary punishment for those accused of attacking healthcare workers. The police, however, maintained that the investigation is proceeding in the right direction. “We are verifying all statements and CCTV footage. Anyone found guilty will be arrested,” said an investigating officer. The incident has once again highlighted the growing insecurity of healthcare professionals, especially women doctors, in government hospitals across the state.
