The prompt alertness of a team of police officers from the Chandannagar Commissionerate, Serampore police station, led to the recovery of a stolen newborn from Serampore Walsh Hospital within an hour of its disappearance.
The swift action has earned wide praise from people across all sections of society.
Commissioner of police Chandannagar Commissionerate, Amit P Jawalgi, expressed his appreciation for the outstanding teamwork of the officers involved. As a token of recognition, he sent a reward for the police team, which was jointly handed over to sub-inspector Pintu Nandy, constable Dipu Roy and Sheikh Eiliyas by the DCP, Serampore, Arnab Biswas.
Mr Biswas stated that earlier today, a mother and her newborn were discharged from Serampore Walsh Hospital. As they exited the building and waited in the hospital compound for a family member to fetch a vehicle, a woman approached and struck a friendly conversation with the mother. During the exchange, the woman took the infant from the mother’s lap under the pretext of affection. Taking advantage of the mother’s momentary distraction, she slipped away with the baby.
The panic-stricken mother raised an alarm, and hospital staff immediately came to her aid. Serampore police were informed, and inspector-in-charge Shukomoy Chatterjee promptly reached the hospital, reviewed CCTV footage, and circulated an image of the suspect to all officers on traffic duty. Naka checking was swiftly initiated, and during one such check at Serampore Nowaga Road junction, sub-inspector Nandy, constable Roy and Sheikh Eiliyas intercepted the woman with the newborn.
The baby was safely returned to the mother, while the accused was taken into custody for further interrogation. During questioning, she admitted to the crime.
DCP Arnab Biswas added: “It was indeed a remarkable achievement resulting from the prompt and coordinated efforts of our police team. They have been duly rewarded for their exemplary service by the Chandannagar Commissionerate.”
