  • Sourav Mukherjee, who is engaged in the preservation of nature and sustainable development in Sunderbans, will get the prestigious Peace Ambassador Award in community development.

The award will be handed over to him at the 15th Peace Achievers International Award 2025 at Abuja, Nigeria. He became the first Indian to receive the award.

The award presented by the African union recognises the individuals and organisations for their contribution towards peace building, social transformation and sustainable development.

Mr Mukherjee has been associated with the sustainable development of Sunderbans, which leads to the better standard of living of the fishermen’s community. Solar lights have been installed in the villages and massive mangrove has been carried out to prevent soil erosion. The inmates of the islands of Sunderbans have been given training in soft skill development.

Talking to The Statesman Mr Mukherjee said: “ I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition. The award belongs not just to me, but to my entire team and the change makers, who have stood by our mission to build stronger, empowered and peaceful communities.”
