Bhai Phonta, a festival where the sisters pray for good health, peace and prosperity of their brothers, was held in the city with usual enthusiasm.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee gave phonta to her brothers at her residence on Harish Chatterjee Street. Her brothers came in the morning and Miss Banerjee, wearing sari in traditional Bengali style, gave phonta to them. She offered them sweets and gave them gifts. The brothers gave a return gift as well.
State power minister Aroop Biswas went to Miss Banerjee’s residence and took phonta from her in the morning.
Later, he went to Nabaneer, an old age home where the women inmates gave phonta to Mr Biswas. Later, the well known actresses too gave him phonta.
Mayor Firhad Hakim took phonta from her sister yesterday evening. He went to Chetla Agrani Club and took phonta from women who live close by. He said: “Bhai Phota is above religion. Sisters from different religions pray for peace and well being of their brothers. The brothers, in turn, give blessings to the sisters. This is the tradition of Bengal. People from different religions and cultures live here peacefully and happily.”
The members of the Medical Bank gave Bhai Phonta to the traffic policemen on duty. Different organisations gave fruits and sweets to the patients of different state-run hospitals on the occasion of Bhai Phonta. Sweets were distributed among the AIDS patients receiving treatment at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
