  • Good news for aspiring medical students in the state — the Medical Council of India (MCI) has approved an additional 50 MBBS seats at Deben Mahato Government Medical College (DMGMC) in Purulia from the current academic year.

According to college sources, the number of MBBS seats has been increased from 100 to 150 for this year. The college authorities stated that the admission process to fill these additional 50 seats will be completed shortly.

Medical Superintendent-cum-vice principal of DMGMC, Dr Sukamal Bishai, said that the number of MBBS seats has also increased in several other medical colleges across the state this year.

In total, 575 MBBS seats have been added across West Bengal for the current academic session. According to the state health department, the increase covers 10 medical colleges — both government and private — including five government institutions.

Among the government colleges, the number of seats has gone up at Purulia, Rampurhat, Raiganj, Cooch Behar and Kalyani Medical Colleges.

Authorities at DMGMC, Purulia, said that an application requesting an increase in seat capacity was submitted around six months ago, and formal approval has now been received, raising the intake by 50 in one phase.

The MBBS course at DMGMC began in 2020 with an intake of 100 students. The admission process for these 100 seats for the current academic year has already been completed through the first and second rounds of counselling. Admissions for the newly approved 50 seats are expected to be finalised in the third round.

Meanwhile, the quality of healthcare services at the hospital is also set to improve, as two anaesthetists and a radiologist are scheduled to join the medical college shortly, following directives from the state health department.

According to the authorities, some departments are facing a shortage of manpower. As various units are being shifted from the Sadar campus to the Hatuara premises, three additional specialists will be posted across two key departments.

“With the approval of the health department, we are going to get two anaesthetists and a radiologist. As a result, the quality of medical services will improve further,” Dr Bishai said.
