Factional feud in minister’s turf leaves three hurt

Harishchandrapur in North Malda, the home turf of minister of state and local MLA Tajmul Hossain, turned into a battlefield on Thursday night following a violent clash between two rival factions of the Trinamul Congress (TMC).
According to sources, followers of Bulbul Khan, a Trinamul-led zilla parishad member, were allegedly attacked by supporters close to minister Tajmul Hossain. Three workers sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The clash reportedly broke out in the Harishchandrapur town area when three TMC workers loyal to Bulbul Khan went out to buy pan. They were allegedly assaulted by Durjay Das, brother of block youth Trinamul president Bijay Das, along with a few others said to be close to the minister. The trio was beaten up and left bleeding.
As news of the attack spread, Bulbul Khan rushed to the spot with a large group of supporters and led a protest outside the local police station. The agitators surrounded the station for several hours, demanding immediate arrest of the accused. The blockade was lifted only after police assured them of action, but tension continues to prevail in the area.
Bulbul Khan alleged: “There is an atmosphere of terror in the area. Those committing atrocities in the name of Trinamul are tarnishing the party’s image. The administration must act firmly against injustice.”
Minister Tajmul Hossain, however, denied any knowledge of the incident. “I returned home by 10 p.m. I’m not aware of what happened in the town area. If anyone has done wrong, the law will take its course,” he said.
The fresh violence has once again laid bare the growing factional feud within the Trinamul in Malda. For months, rivalry between groups loyal to Tajmul and Bulbul has been intensifying. During Durga Puja, too, several houses of Bulbul’s associates were allegedly attacked by the minister’s camp — and now, the same group faces fresh allegations of assault.
Political observers link the tension to simmering resentment within the party since its poor performance in the recent panchayat and Lok Sabha polls, with several members expressing dissatisfaction over the minister’s role. Tajmul’s brother Jammu Rahman has also faced extortion allegations from some workers.
Meanwhile, the BJP has taken a swipe at the ruling party, saying, “The Trinamul’s infighting has made life miserable for common people. Law and order have completely collapsed.”
