  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dry weather over most parts of Bengal on Saturday, but warned of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the south Andaman Sea, which is likely to intensify in the next few days.

According to the IMD, South Bengal districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Nadia, and Purulia, will remain mainly dry with no significant change in temperature over the next few days.

However, in North Bengal, while the weather will remain mostly dry on Saturday, light rain is likely in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Kalimpong at isolated places.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, has warned that the low-pressure system is likely to turn into a depression by October 25, a deep depression by October 26, and may intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27 over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. If this happens, coastal areas of Bengal may start receiving rain and strong winds early next week.

The system is likely to affect the Chhath Puja festivities, with light rain or thundershowers expected in South 24 Parganas and Purba and Paschim Medinipur from October 26 onwards, spreading to other parts of South Bengal by October 27-28.

On Saturday, Chhath Puja devotees will commence the festivities with “Nahay Khay,” marking the beginning of the four-day celebration.

The IMD has also warned of strong winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, over the Bay of Bengal and nearby coasts from October 27 onwards, making sea conditions rough to very rough.

“Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea area of Central Bay of Bengal and South Odisha coasts from 27-10-2025 and North Bay of Bengal and along and off West Bengal-North Odisha coasts from 28-10-2025, fisherman whoever in deep sea are advised to return to the coast by 27.10.2025” stated IMD.
