  • The Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja procession, which began 70 years ago with just seven puja committees under the central committee, has now grown to include 180 puja committees this year.

Earlier, the Jagadhatri idol immersion took place on Dashami itself. However, this year, the immersion and the accompanying procession will take place the following day, on 1 November.

At a Press conference, organised by the Central Jagadhatri Puja Committee, Shubhojit Shaw elaborated on the details of this year’s celebrations in Chandannagar and Bhadreswar. He said that the Jagadhatri aradhana (invoking the goddess) will commence from Shasti, 27 October, and the grand procession will be held on 1 November.

Last year, 177 puja committees from Chandannagar, Mankundu and Bhadreswar were under the Central Committee. This year, three new puja committees have joined, bringing the total to 180 – 133 in the Chandannagar police station area and 47 in the Bhadreswar police station area. Among these, 21 pujas are celebrating their jubilee year.

A total of 70 puja committees will participate in the Jagadhatri procession, which will feature 245 lorries. Of these, 56 puja committees are from the Chandannagar police station area and 14 from Bhadreswar.

The idol immersion will take place at 14 Ganga ghats, including those in Chandannagar and Bhadreswar, such as Rani Ghat.

Mr Shaw further stated that, following Chandannagar’s long-standing tradition, DJ boxes are strictly prohibited during the immersion procession. The use of plastic has been completely banned. Each puja committee must keep a fire extinguisher in the vehicle carrying the idol and instal CCTV cameras inside the mandap. Lead-free paint must be used on the idols to prevent pollution. Throwing or collecting garbage on the road or around the puja mandap is strictly prohibited. Fireworks are not allowed during the immersion, and no electric illumination boards that obstruct the drivers’ front view will be permitted.

Strict action will be taken against any puja committee that violates the Central Committee’s rules and regulations.

The procession route has been divided into four zones, with central committee members deployed to regulate movement at the starting points of each zone.

The Chandannagar Municipal Corporation will provide all basic amenities to devotees, including drinking water, adequate lighting, bio-toilets, medical assistance camps, ambulances, “May I Help You” booths, and firefighting systems. Thousands of police personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order.
