Tension gripped Panihati on Friday night after a local Trinamul Congress (TMC) youth leader allegedly assaulted four residents during a Kali Puja idol immersion.
The accused, identified as Bubai Mallik, reportedly attacked a group of youths with a pistol butt, leaving one of them with a head injury. Police have launched a search for Mallik and three others — Sagar, Banti, and Kartik — all said to be TMC supporters. According to local sources, the incident occurred when Bubai Mallik and his associates were returning from the immersion procession. A verbal altercation broke out between them and a local youth standing near a club. Witnesses alleged that Mallik began abusing them and soon returned with his associates to launch a violent attack.
The victims claimed they were beaten with bricks and bamboo sticks before Mallik struck one of them with a firearm. Four injured youths later lodged a complaint at the local police station, accusing the TMC leader and his associates of assault and intimidation. Residents expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the area. “We no longer feel safe; these people roam around with guns openly,” said a local resident.
BJP leader Sajal Ghosh condemned the attack, alleging: “TMC leaders carry firearms and terrorise common people. This is the culture the party thrives in.” Meanwhile, police have stepped up patrol in the area amid simmering tension.
