• Quit HMC chief post for personal reasons, not political: Sujay

  • Howrah: Sujay Chakraborty, who was serving as Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) chairperson until Sunday, clarified that he had resigned his post for personal reasons and not political.

"No one wanted to remove me. This decision has been taken for personal reasons. If the party gives me any other responsibility, I will fulfil it," he told reporters.

Chakraborty's resignation, submitted to Bengal urban development minister Firhad Hakim on Sunday evening, came as a shock to members of the administration because he had run an important meeting on Saturday afternoon and attended multiple Chhath Puja events over the past two days.

The move comes merely two days after Saikat Chowdhury, the vice-chairperson of the board of administrators at HMC, resigned his post a couple of days ago.

Sources close to Chakraborty said he resigned because his professional career as a child specialist had been suffering. Trinamool's Howrah chief Arup Roy said the HMC commissioner had been instructed to continue the party's development work.

Trinamool sources said a section of the party was unhappy with Chakraborty's performance leading some to believe that anger of residents over the lack of municipal services in Howrah could hurt the party's prospects in the upcoming polls. (With inputs from agencies)
