  • Kolkata: Four days after a violent mob stormed into Deeshari Megacity and attacked Customs inspector Pradeep Kumar in his own flat, his wife and four-year-old daughter are yet to recover from the shock.

Too frightened to return, they have temporarily moved out of the housing complex.

Kumar, who suffered severe head injuries, is now admitted to AIIMS Kalyani. "It felt like being lynched. I'm lucky to be alive," he told TOI, still shaken by the brutality of the assault.

On Monday, TOI spoke to Kumar, who was still grappling with the trauma of experiencing a situation equivalent to "

" that left him injured, and he was lucky to have a close shave from the jaws of death.

"My treatment is still on, and I will have to stay here for at least the next three days. After that, I will decide whether to return to the flat at Sonarpur, where I have been living on rent for the past one year. The incident was kind of mob lynching that was not less than a life threat. The hooligans did not even spare manhandling my wife, who was pleading with them to spare me," said Kumar.

"My wife and daughter are still shivering in fear as they witnessed how over 50 people broke open the gate and the door of our flat and barged in to assault me.

I was bleeding profusely from my wounds, and I had to be rushed to the hospital. My family members are yet to come to terms with the violence of that night, and they are reluctant to return to the flat, fearing a repeat," the inspector told TOI.

Kumar indicated that, depending on the situation, he might also decide to change his residence. "The residents of the housing complex are also in panic as the incident has raised security concerns in the locality dotted with several housing complexes," he said.

On Thursday night, the victim was driving back home and had a tiff with an auto driver after the three-wheeler hit his SUV. "An immersion procession was passing and I was trying to negotiate it. The auto hit my SUV, and there was an altercation, which turned out to be violent later. Even after I left the place and returned home, the accused followed me, barged into the complex, and figured out my flat where they attacked me, misbehaved, and shoved my wife," he recounted.

He also alleged that despite calling the police station repeatedly, he did not get any help from the cops at that moment as they cited a lack of force because of immersion duty.
