  • Rotary Club of Calcutta is 107-year-old Service Club based in Kolkata and is the first Rotary Club set up in India way back in 1919. Referred to as The Old Number One, the club as part of its activities has had people like Mahatma Gandhi, Sir C V Raman, The Dalai Lama, and Presidents V V Giri, Dr K R Narayanan, Giani Zail Singh address its members.

Through all these long years, the Club has had a distinguished record of service to the underprivileged in disease prevention, literacy, women’s empowerment and environment. It is notable that it is the oldest continuously running Rotary Club in Mainland Asia.

Over the years of our existence we have supported underprivileged communities in various areas such as health, water and sanitation, education, women’s empowerment and environment.

They have the enviable record of continuing an annual event of a day of sunshine for underprivileged children “Annual Children’s Treat” for 100 continuous years.

A landmark was marked today –that is the 5000th Rotary Weekly Meeting of Members.

Presidents of 7 Rotary Clubs sponsored by Rotary Club of Calcutta were felicitated, and an AV of the Club’s emblem and NCLCL Archives were released.

The club also announced a unique project “Each to Teach” – in this, children of Class 9 to 12 in Metropolitan Schools in Kolkata will be mentored to impart basic education to primary school children in the most underserved areas of South 24-Parhganas. This creates an ownership in children of city-based schools to work for underprivileged communities from a young age while also improving their leadership qualities. And it improves the quality of basic education in the children in remote areas over and beyond their classroom instruction, creating a win-win situation. This is being done in association with Pathanam and The Education Trust.
