  • A ward boy of the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital was arrested by the police today on charges of molestation, assault and outraging the modesty of a patient’s daughter in the ward last night.

The ward boy had allegedly switched off the lights of the ward, where the victim was alone with her mother, and tried to rape her, the complaint, lodged by the patient, stated.

The ward boy was apprehended early this morning from his residence by the Women Police Station officials of Burdwan. The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court ordered two days’ police remand for him.

Biswajit Dey, the ward boy, has been serving at the hospital for the last 21 years. According to the complaint, he had molested the patient’s married daughter, who was staying the night at the hospital, and also had slapped her.

The patient, who is from a tribal family, had been admitted to the 30-bed female Chest Medicine ward of the hospital a week ago. Her daughter was staying at the hospital as her attendant since Saturday. She told the police that Biswajit had entered the ward all of a sudden when she was with her mother. The ward did not have any other patient last night.

The daughter alleged: “He switched off the lights and came close to me and hugged me from the back. When I screamed, he started to slap me harshly and started pulling my sari. I somehow managed to escape and sought assistance from others.” Biswajit had escaped the scene by the time.

The police slapped charges of using criminal force against a woman, demanding sexual favours, intending to disrobe a woman, and outraging a woman’s modesty (under Sections 74, 75, 76(2) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita).
