Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, senior All India Congress Committee, (AICC) member and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday extended a warm welcome to all “secular, educated, capable, and dedicated youths” opposed to the BJP and RSS, inviting them to join the Congress fold.
The statement came during a programme in Murshidabad, where the entire district unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) formally merged with the Indian National Congress. Chowdhury personally handed over the party flag to the new members in a ceremony attended by district Congress president Manoj Chakraborty and other senior leaders. According to Congress sources, more than 500 leaders and workers of the AAP joined the Congress on Monday, inspired by the party’s ideology and expressing confidence in the leadership of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who is also a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
“This joining will further strengthen the Congress organisation,” Chowdhury said. “All of them are educated, qualified, and hardworking youths. I sincerely welcome them to the Congress family,” he added. Speaking on behalf of the new entrants, Sohail, a local AAP leader of the group, said, “We have always dreamt of a prosperous and progressive Murshidabad, and we believe that only the Congress can make it possible. Even though not all our members could be present today, thousands of our workers will continue to follow Adhir Chowdhury’s guidance and work with the Congress in the days to come.”
Chowdhury said the large-scale joining reflected the growing trust and confidence of the people in the Congress. “This development proves that people are increasingly standing with the Congress. The unholy nexus between the BJP and the Trinamul Congress, which thrives on communal polarisation, is being rejected by the people. Both in villages and cities, citizens want freedom from their divisive politics. The people will give them a fitting reply in the coming days,” he asserted.
