A fatwa by the local MLA to set BJP cadres on fire has ignited political controversy in Burdwan today, the day the Election Commission of India rolled out the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The MLA, Bardhaman (Uttar) representative Nishith Malik, was leading a Trinamul Congress procession in Burdwan this afternoon. The procession, organised by the Trinamul Congress’s Burdwan-II unit in the name of protecting voters’ rights, marched from Ullhas Crossing on the Old GT Road up to Ghordour Chatti in the town. Malik was shouting slogans with other participants.
Malik said: ‘SIR is declared. We don’t need to oppose this.’ He added: ‘If, in the name of this SIR, the BJP truly intends to discard a single genuine voter, we won’t spare them. We’ll set the party’s cadres on fire in public.’ He went on to claim: ‘We need to be cautious and harvest more and more votes to defeat them, as the BJP is trying to pollute Bengal.’
Malik’s public statement has irked the BJP. A district committee leader of the BJP, S R Banerjee, reacted sharply, saying: ‘Such leaders have fallen bankrupt and their intimidatory tactics may cause disturbances. We demand SIR under the protection of central forces, in view of such provocative remarks.’
