Not against SIR but no genuine name be omitted: TMC

Trinamul Congress will vehemently protest in Delhi if the name of a genuine voter is dropped during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
“We are not against the SIR. But it has been used to benefit the BJP. We are not against the SIR and we want that the voters who are not genuine should be dropped from the list,” said Trinamul Congress leaders.
The party leaders urged workers and people to maintain cool and not take law and order in their hands. “Remember Mamata Banerjee, party’s chairperson and Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary, are keeping a tab on the situation and party leaders are also very alert. Any lapses on the part of the Election Commission will be dealt with seriously and the party will go to the last extent to ensure that the name of a genuine voter is dropped from the electoral roll,” the leaders said.
Trinamul Congress national spokesperson Tauseefur Rehman, reacting to the announcement of SIR in state, said: “We are not opposing any process. However, if the name of any legitimate voter’s name is removed, we will take up a constitutional fight against the SIR and the ‘zamindar’ BJP, all the way to Delhi. If any genuine name is omitted, we will pursue the matter through the leader channel and the ECI should not not become the branch office of the BJP. If democracy is under attack we cannot remain silent. TMC and the govt. of West Bengal has nothing to fear from any exercise undertaken by the ECI or any other body. TMC has earned the mandate of the people through hard work and public trust and not through any short cuts. As far as the ECI announcement is concerned, the party senior leadership will review the details and the party will take all necessary steps at an appreciative time in due course.”
It may be recalled that Abhishek Banerjee had suggested that the Lok Sabha and the state Assembly should be dissolved and fresh SIR should be conducted across the country. He argued that if the Election Commission of India’s voters’ lists are faulty, then all the elections, which have been conducted on the basis of the faulty voters’ list, become faulty.”
