  • The nephew of a BJP MLA was arrested early this morning more than five years after he allegedly raped the minor daughter of a party cadre at an amusement park here.

Sahadeb Ghorui, the nephew of Durgapur (Paschim) MLA Lakshman Ghorui, had been absconding since May 2020. Based on a tip-off a team intercepted him while he was out for a morning walk at Bamnabera, his native village in Kanksa Police Station area. The deputy commissioner of police, Durgapur, Abhishek Gupta said: “A police team caught him in the wee hours from near his home.”

Sahadeb, a former BJP Youth Morcha leader, had managed to evade the law ever since a complaint of rape was registered against him at the Kanksa PS on 5 May, 2020.

The victim was a minor and her father an active BJP cadre.

In his complaint, the father narrated that Sahadeb had taken his daughter to a privately-owned amusement park at the City Centre in Durgapur town on the pretext of providing her a job there. But, he alleged, “Sahadeb confined my daughter in a room of a guest house inside the park and raped her repeatedly.” The minor fell sick and, after being rescued, described everything to her parents.

The accused had then fled the state after the FIR was filed and a medical examination of the girl was conducted. According to the police, he was absconding in several locations in Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for the last five years.

Lakshman Ghorui, the MLA and a BJP state committee member, today distanced himself from his nephew and said: “It’s not at all a political matter and was never linked with my political career. In no way are my family members linked to my political activities.” He added, “The TMC is trying to play dirty politics by relating me and my party to a personal matter. I will wait for justice.”

On the way for his production at the Pocso Court in Durgapur, Sahadeb claimed: “I’m a victim of politics. A false charge was framed against me to malign my uncle.” The Pocso Court today ordered jail custody for Sahadeb till 11 November.
