  • Even though cyclone ‘Montha’ was mainly restricted to the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata and Howrah, could feel its rippling effect for the next few days. The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted moderate rainfall for most of the districts of South Bengal till 31 October along with a forecast of heavy rainfall at a few isolated pockets in the region.

According to the RMC’s bulletin issued at around 5.30 p.m. today, the ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm, Montha’ over west central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest wards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 2.30 p.m. over the same region, about 70 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 150 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 250 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 480 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha). The cyclone was to make a landfall tonight at an estimated speed of around 110 kmph.

As pointed out by the RMC scientists, while West Bengal as whole is unlikely to get any direct impact of the cyclone, parts of the state could feel the brunt of the remnants of the weather system for the next few days. The weather officials are anticipating moderate rainfall for Kolkata, Howrah, and other districts of South Bengal till 31 October. However, while the rainfall could be of lighter or mediocre amount, thunderstorms and gusty winds of around 30-40kmph could hit the region during the period. “Generally, places at the periphery of the cyclone experience such thunderstorms. After losing intensity and turning into a depression, the system is to extend till Chhattisgarh, its remnants could bring rainfall and thunderstorms to parts of South Bengal for the next three days,” explained the scientist.

For tomorrow, heavy rain is tipped to occur at one or two places over South 24-Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram districts while thunderstorm with gusty winds between 30-40 kmph and lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of South Bengal. The weather office has issued a ‘yellow warning’ for these districts for the next three days.

Meanwhile, around six trains have been rescheduled by the Railways due to the Severe Cyclonic Storm, Montha.’ According to the South Eastern Railway, 18045 East Coast Express, 22825 – Shalimar-MGR Chennai Express, 22887 – Howrah-SMVT Bengaluru Express, 12842 – Coromandel Express, 22807 Santragachi-MGR Chennai Express and 22853 Shalimar Visakhapatnam Express have been rescheduled following the cyclone.
