  • Jalpaiguri: A notorious poacher, Rikoch Narjari, was handed a seven-year jail term — the highest sentence under the amended Wildlife Protection Act — by a Jalpaiguri court on Wednesday.

He was also fined Rs1 lakh, non-payment of which will result in an additional six-month jail term.

Narjari, also known as Devid Guite and Damra, from Paschim Salkumar in Alipurduar's Falakata, has played an active role in poaching rhinos in Jaldapara since 2014. Alipurduar district police arrested him in Kamrup, Assam, in March 2024. Later, Narjari and his aide, Lukas Basumatary, were convicted in a separate wildlife smuggling case.

Their main shooter, Leken Basumatary, died in judicial custody in Dec 2024.

Previously, Narjari served a three-year jail term. After his 2019 release, he lived in Manipur, where he met other rhino poachers. He again participated in poaching activities at Jaldapara National Park in 2019 and 2021. "Narjari was being tried in two cases of rhino poaching and horn smuggling in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. The Alipurduar CJM has stamped him as a repeat offender, which helped us to get him the maximum punishment," said Parveen Kaswan, DFO, Jaldapara wildlife division.
