  • Kolkata: Former Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee on Wednesday assumed charge as the chairperson of the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA). Chatterjee was appointed as NKDA chairperson on Oct 18.

Upon assuming charge, Chatterjee held meetings with senior NKDA officials to familiarise himself with the functioning of the board and to understand the details of his new role. Chatterjee earlier told TOI that he had started developing a plan to enhance civic amenities and infrastructure in New Town.

"After assuming charge, the chairperson held meetings and set out immediate priorities in matters of service delivery, orderly development, and citizen-focused governance," said a senior NKDA official.

Chatterjee served as the mayor of Kolkata from 2010 to 2018, and is the first non-bureaucrat chairperson of NKDA.
