  • Kharagpur: A third-year BTech printing engineering student of Jadavpur University, Soham Patra (20), died after falling off a moving train while returning home to Bankura with his mother.

His body was found floating in the Kansai river Wednesday. Police sources claimed he jumped into the river between Kansai Halt and Midnapore station when his mother was in the washroom. His father, Deepak Kumar, also believes his son died by suicide and has not lodged any complaint.

Patra was travelling on the Howrah-Adra Rani Shiromoni Passenger. "Returning from the washroom, Patra's mother Mallika found him missing.

She learned from co-passengers that he had gone towards the gate. After searching the compartment, she reported the matter to cops at Midnapore station around 9 pm," a source said.

Cops began a search on Tuesday. "Around 11.30 am on Wednesday, the body was seen floating in the Kansai," an officer said.

A university source said Patra had "suicidal tendencies". "He attended sessions at the university's counselling centre. Two months ago, teachers told his parents about his suicidal thoughts and asked them to keep a watch and seek help," a professor said.

"We suspect suicide due to depression. But the details will be clear after the autopsy report arrives," the officer added.
