  • Kolkata: The Bengal BJP on Wednesday demanded that the death of Pradeep Kar, who allegedly died by suicide due to fear of NRC, be probed and termed protests by Trinamool Congress as "theatrics".

"The death (of Pradeep Kar) has to be probed, and the actual reason needs to be found out. Was the suicide note actually written by him? Why should he be tense at all? Trinamool has started theatrics over the death. If he died by suicide from the fear of NRC, then Trinamool should be blamed for spreading the canards," said Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya stated that Kar had no reason to panic, as his name was listed in the 2002 electoral rolls.

"We find it difficult to believe that a person who is conscious about the NRC did not even check his name on the electoral roll," he said.

BJP neta Dilip Ghosh blamed Trinamool for fanning fear. "Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been spreading fear among people. The results can be seen now. She should accept responsibility for the death," he said.

Terming SIR as "a harmless exercise", Majumdar said that nobody died when it was carried out in Bihar.

"Trinamool is trying to create a fear psychosis. The SIR happened earlier and will happen this time too. But Trinamool is spreading canards," he said.

BJP functionary from Panihati, Chandicharan Roy, said that Kar was suffering from depression. "There were family issues. We have demanded an impartial enquiry into the death. We also need to verify his handwriting," he said.

BJP also blamed TMC for spreading fear after a Cooch Behar resident, Khairul Sheikh, attempted suicide purportedly over SIR fears. "Khairul might have got frightened following the campaigns of Trinamool against SIR. Trinamool is trying to create an atmosphere of fear among the minorities against SIR for political gain," said BJP functionary Bapi Goswami from Cooch Behar.
